HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Memphis softball team split a doubleheader with Southern Miss on Saturday at the USM Softball Complex. The Tigers fell 9-3 in game one before earning a 2-1 victory against the Golden Eagles in game two.
Sophomore southpaw Janelle Valle (5-7) earned the victory in the circle for Memphis, scattering seven hits in a complete game effort. Valle allowed one run and just one walk for her fifth victory of the season.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after junior Leigh Rowan hit a leadoff double to center field. A sacrifice bunt by senior Brittany Gooch moved Rowan to third, allowing the designated player to score on a wild pitch with two outs.
After Southern Miss tied the score in the bottom of the second, Memphis regained its one-run lead in the third on an RBI single by senior Tori Gross. Senior Leandra Hines started the drive by reaching on an error and advanced to second on a single by freshman Lelani Bernardino. Gross then connected on the one-out game-winning run with a single up the middle.
A couple defensive saves helped the Tigers secure the one-run victory. Memphis recorded double plays in both the third and fifth to end a couple USM scoring threats. Bernardino then retired the potential tying run at home plate with an assist from right field in the sixth to end the inning.
Both Bernardino and Gross had 2-for-3 performances at the plate.
Southern Miss freshman Courtney Ramos (9-7) suffered the loss. Ramos allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five.
In game one, Southern Miss scored two runs in the first, one run in the second and one run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Memphis scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one, but the Golden Eagles put five more runs on the board in the bottom of the inning for a 9-3 victory.
Freshman Jessica Phillips hit a two-run single in the sixth inning for Memphis and scored on an error. Sophomore Maddie McKinley led the team with a 2-for-3 performance.
Junior Vanessa Walle (4-6) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits with four walks. USM senior Samantha Davis (7-6) allowed three runs on seven hits for the victory.
