Emily Underwood Named to Preseason C-USA Volleyball Team

IRVING, Texas - Junior middle blocker Emily Underwood was named to the 2009 Conference USA Volleyball Preseason Team as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches, the league announced today.
One of three middle blockers in the league to make the squad, Underwood led the Memphis and C-USA in blocking, while finishing seventh in the nation with 1.45 blocks per set. The Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada, native made 20 solo blocks and 173 block assists en route to picking up Second Team All-C-USA honors. She wrapped up her sophomore campaign ranked second on Memphis' single-season total blocks and block assists lists.
Not only was she a force defensively, put she excelled on the offensive side of the net as well. The C-USA All-Academic selection started in all 31 matches and led the Tigers with 388 points scored and was second on the club with a .256 attack percentage. She downed 269 kills (2.26 kps).
Houston junior middle blocker Lucy Charuk and Rice junior setter Meredith Schamun were voted Conference USA Volleyball Preseason Players of the Year. Rice will serve as hosts to this year's C-USA Volleyball Championship set for Nov. 20-22 inside the Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston, Texas. The top eight teams will advance to tournament action. Underwood and the Tigers will get the 2009 season gets underway on Aug. 28, when they host the Evansville Aces in the Memphis Invitational at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
