MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team continued its hot-hitting, Wednesday afternoon as it run ruled Alabama A&M 8-0 at Tiger Softball Complex.
Senior Heather Mott got things started in the bottom of the first inning with a triple down the left field line. Fellow senior Maddie McKinley brought Mott home on the next at bat, connecting on a single through the left side to put Memphis ahead 1-0.
McKinley would steal second base and Ashleigh King drew a walk before Libby Goranson's double to right center brought both of them home to extend the lead to 3-0. Alyssa Palmieri recorded her sixth RBI of the season on the next at bat on a double to left center that brought Goranson home to cap off a four-run first inning for Memphis.
The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the third to extend the led to 5-0. After a leadoff double from McKinley, King reached on error to set up runners on the corner. McKinley then scored on a double steal attempt to make it 5-0.
Memphis closed out Alabama A&M and invoked the run rule in the fifth inning with three runs to make it 8-0. Pitcher Ellen Roberts got things started by reaching first on an error. Coach Windy Thees then put Ijiah Hargrove in to pinch run for Roberts.
Hargrove stole second before Goranson singled down the right field line to bring her home and extend the lead to 6-0. Palmieri then recorded her second double and third hit of the afternoon to put both her and Goranson in scoring position.
Keenah Prestridge grounded out to shortstop on the next at bat, but the force out allowed Goranson to score and Palmieri to advance to third base. Kailey Kassner pinch hit for Alex Marshall on the next at bat and grounded out to shortstop to bring Palmieri around to score and seal the victory for Memphis.
Palmieri and McKinley both finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 as Palmieri recorded a career-high two doubles, and McKinley had a career-best three stolen bases. Goranson went 2-for-2 with three RBI's and one double.
Roberts tossed five scoreless innings for Memphis, striking out four and allowing only three hits, earning her first victory of the season. The Tigers improve to 8-2 on the season and have now won six games in a row.
The Tigers are currently facing the Bulldogs in the second game of the doubleheader at Tiger Softball .
