Oct 01, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Memphis picks up first conference win of the campaign
Marie Levasseur scored a goal in each half to lead Memphis to its first American Athletic Conference win of the season, 2-1, over Houston Thursday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The freshman forward is now tied for the team lead with four goals.
Â
"Tonight was crucial to get the three points This is a massive weekend, because you have to get the points on your home field," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Marie's performance was huge. There weren't a lot of positives tonight but anytime you have somebody score two goals you have to acknowledge that. We need that tonight. Hopefully that gives her even more confidence moving forward."
Â
Memphis (6-3-2, 1-0-1 AAC) had far more chances in the match and kept the Cougars' goalkeeper Jordan Brown busy throughout, as she was forced to make seven saves.
Â
Maryse Bard-Martel, who started her 51st consecutive match, didn't register a save in the 90 minutes.
Â
The Tigers first goal came after a deep cross from Elysia Masters from the right side. Levasseur was able to gather the ball and fend off a defender before putting it into the back of the net.
Â
Memphis led Houston 1-0 at halftime but the Cougars fought back and scored an equalizer in the 55th minute. Lexa Green played Selena Peters through on goal and she dribbled around Bard-Martel and slotted into the goal.
Â
Levasseur scored the game winner after a shot from Sydney Kingston was saved. The rebound fell to Levasseur's feet and she calmly scored.
Memphis has another crucial home American Athletic Conference match against SMU, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.Â
