Vaughn takes the title in the discus and shot put
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The University of Memphis track and field programs wrapped up the second day of their season-opening outdoor meet Saturday at the Rhodes Invitational.
The Tigers led the way in the men's mile. Fabian Fiege (4:16.50) took the title for the men's team with teammate Austin Carter claiming third (4:17.41). Fellow distance runners Drew Austell (8th; 4:24.44) and Brock Ballard (9th; 4:24.55) notched top-10 finishes for Memphis. Lauren Wheeler posted a second place finish in the women's mile with a time of 5:20.47.
Aaron Persinger (14.85), Aaron Willett (15.02) and Michael Carey (15.14) dominated the men's 110m hurdles taking first, second and third. Di'Anna Wright earned a top-5 finish in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 15.43.
In the women's 400m dash, Destinee Lansden (56.34) claimed second for the Lady Tigers. De'Vonni Farrar followed behind finishing 13th (1:00.77). Antaun Andrews recored a top-5 finish (4th) for the Tigers in the men's 400m dash with a time of 49.10
Da'Quanya Byrd-West took the title in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.24.
The Lady Tigers had the upper hand in the 800m run. Martina Rodriguez-Sala (1st; 2:10.39), Maya Williamson (2nd; 2:12.54), Rebeka Holt (2:16.04) and Julia Merbach (4th; 2:19.80) domineered the race. On the men's side, Alexx Klatt (2nd; 1:53.70) and Corentin Louis (3rd; 1:53.75) posted a top-5 finish in the 800m race.
The men and women continued to do well in the running events as Aaron Persinger claimed the title and led the way in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 54.77. Teammates Michael Carey (4th; 55.19), Aaron Willett (6th; 56.53) and Jason Kimmet (7th; 57.20) followed behind rounding out the top-10. Bryd-West and Lansden notched first and second in the women's 200m dash. Donovan Ellison finished in the top-10 in the men's 200m dash with a time of 22.43 (9th).
Memphis took fourth in the men's 4x400m relay. Austin Carter, James Durkin, Fabian Fiege and Brandon Keys posted a time of 3:24.20.
Moving to field events, the Tigers prevailed in the pole vault. Pauls Pujats took the title for the men with a mark of 5.00m, 16'4.75". Clara Amat-Fernandez (1st; 3.95m, 12'11.50"), Sabrina Hochreuther (2nd; 3.95m 12'11.50"), Dorina Baiker (3rd; 3.65m, 11'11.75"), Jada Parker (4th; 3.50m, 11'5.75") and Kimi Jennings (6th; 3.35m, 10'11.75") earned top-10 finishes.
Sydney Wright (5.72m, 18'9.25") and Chiamaka Okparaebo (5.49m, 18'0.25") collected a first and third place finishes in the women's long jump. In the men's high jump, Devynn Brandon recorded an 8th place finish with a mark of 1.88m, 6'2".
Luke Vaughn claimed the title in the men's discus throw (56.66m, 185'11") and shot put with a mark of 17.09m, 56'1". Yannik Schaly (4th; 50.51m, 165'0.8") and Michael Criticos (5th; 48.20m, 158'0.2") followed behind in the discus rounding out the top-5. In the men's shot put, Rafael Vallery (2nd; 16.13m, 52'11") and Matt Sipe (3rd; 14.79m, 48'6.25") rounded out the top-5.
The Tigers continued to run the day as Martine Bye clinched the title in the women's javelin throw with a mark of 41.99m, 137'0.9" and notched fourth in the shot put (12.01m, 39'5"). On the men's side, Michael Criticos claimed the title for the men with a mark of 65.51m, 214'11". Thomas Poole (2nd; 61.91m, 203'0.1"), Kyle Bynum (3rd; 61.90m, 203'0.1"), Marc Klaschka (5th; 56.70m, 186") and Tim Jones (6th; 52.94m, 173'0.8") made their debuts as well in the javelin rounding out the top-10 for Memphis.
The first day consisted of the men's and women's hammer throw and triple jump followed by the 5000m and 10,000m races.
Matt Sipe claimed first place in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 54.41m, 178'0.6". Luke Vaughn posted a personal-best 52.09m, 170'11" and notched second place.
Kristen Adams took third for Memphis with a time of 17:53.72 in the women's 5000m race.
Memphis travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., March 27-28 to compete in the Alabama Crimson Tide Classic.
