Henderson catches one TD, runs for another score in the victory.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of Memphis freshman Darrell Henderson accounted for two touchdowns, and the Tigers defense held the Tulane rushing attack in check to lift the visitors from the Bluff City to a 24-14 American Athletic Conference victory Friday.
The win improved the Tigers' record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Memphis is off to its second-straight 2-0 start in conference play. The Tigers also began their 2015 league schedule with a 2-0 mark. It is the first time Memphis started conference play with 2-0 records in consecutive seasons since 1968 and 1969. The Green Wave fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Memphis now gets one extra day of preparation for next week, as it returns to playing on Saturday. The Tigers make their first trip in program history to Annapolis, Md., to face No. 25 Navy at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Oct. 22. The Midshipmen received an unexpected bye week when they were unable to play at East Carolina Thursday (Oct. 13) as a result of flooding in the Greenville, N.C., area from Hurricane Matthew.
For the second-straight week, the Memphis offense looked out-of-sync in the first half and wasn't able to capitalize on the Green Wave's miscues. The Tigers recovered an onside kick following Jake Elliott's first field goal and also picked up Tulane fumbles on two punt returns, but only managed three points from those Green Wave mistakes. Elliott connected on a 21-yard field goal following the Green Wave's second muffed punt return.
The Tigers offense, though, got going just before halftime. Following a Tulane punt, Memphis started on its own 35 with 2:54 left in the second period. After three Riley Ferguson completions moved the ball into Tulane territory, the Tigers quarterback hit Henderson out in the flat and the Batesville, Miss., native did the rest. Henderson took Ferguson's screen pass and rumbled 46 yards for the score to give Memphis the lead for good at 13-7. The reception was a season-long for Henderson.
But Henderson wasn't done. After an Elliott 50-yard field goal extended the Tigers' lead to 16-7 late in the third period, Henderson put the contest out of reach in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers defense forced a Green Wave 3-and-out and, following a Tulane punt, Memphis started its opening drive of the final period on its own 20. Three plays later, the Tigers were in Green Wave territory just across midfield. Then, it was time for some more Henderson magic.
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound running back burst through the line and out-ran the Tulane defense to the end zone for a 22-7 lead. Sam Craft followed Henderson's touchdown with a two-point conversion run and the Tigers held a 24-7 advantage with 11:52 to go.
A Glen Cuiellette-to-Kendall Adroin 20-yard connection early in the second quarter gave Tulane its first and only lead of the contest at 7-3. Cuiellette's two-yard touchdown plunge late capped the game's scoring at 24-14.
Henderson finished the game with season bests for rushing (75), receiving (67) and all-purpose (156) yards. Doroland Dorceus led the Memphis ground attack with 81 yards on seven carries. Riley Ferguson was 21-of-34 passing for 236 yards and one score.
The Tigers defense kept Memphis within striking distance in the first half and clamped down on the Tulane offense after halftime. Memphis held the Green Wave to 313 total yards, including 169 on the ground. The Green Wave entered Friday's game with the nation's 16th-leading rushing offense at 246.6 yards per contest.
Austin Hall paced the Memphis defense with season-highs for total tackles (12) and TFL (3). Curtis Akin had eight total stops, and Arthur Maulet recorded seven total tackles and one pass break-up.
Ernest Suttles posted his first career pass break-up, and junior college transfer Jonathan Cook had his first career interception.
