Creighton, Elmore Lead Tigers In Setback To Southern Illinois
Dec 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
It was the first game since ECU on February 27, 2016 that two players scored 20+ points
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team fell short in a game of runs to Southern Illinois Sunday by a score of 69-61. Cheyenne Creighton and Brea Elmore had career nights for the Tigers as Memphis falls to 3-6 on the year. This was the final non-conference road trip for Memphis this season.
Â
How It Happened
Memphis jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with back-to-back baskets by Taylor Williams and Cheyenne Creighton. The Salukis answered with their own 9-0 run that was interrupted on a Brianna Porter basket with 5:31 remaining in the first.
Â
Southern Illinois proceeded to build its first half lead to as many as seven until a fastbreak lay-up by Creighton ignited a 13-6 Memphis run that tied up the game at 23-all. Creighton hit the lay-up to tie up the contest at that point.
Â
The Memphis momentum carried its way through halftime and into the third, building a lead to as many as eight with 5:31 left in the third quarter.
Â
The biggest run of the day was granted to Southern Illinois as the Salukis produced an 18-1 run to close out the third quarter. Memphis came within six on multiple occasions in the fourth, but the third quarter run was too much to overcome at the end of the game.
Â
Turning Point
With Memphis up eight points and over five minutes to play in the third, Southern Illinois went on an 18-1 run including a 4-for-4 effort from beyond the arc to close out the third quarter.
