Softball Picks Up The Split Friday Afternoon

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Memphis softball team picked up a split Friday afternoon at the DeMarini Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. In game one of the day, Memphis fell by a score of 2-1 to Boise State before defeating Utah State by an 8-0 margin in five innings.

Memphis moves to 4-3 on the year with three games remaining on the schedule this weekend. Potential weather is in the forecast, but the plan remains to play two games tomorrow against Hawai'I and UNLV and one game Sunday against Nevada.

The Tigers struck first against the Broncos in the top of the first inning with an RBI triple by Lindsay Crowdus. Crowdus went on to record a hit against Utah State to extend her hitting streak to seven games.

Boise State answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning. The teams proceeded to remain tied at 1-1 until bottom of the seventh inning when the Broncos won on a pinch-hit home run.

A three-run home run by Regan Hadley in the first inning against Utah State helped propel the Tigers offense to an 8-0 shutout. Memphis collected eight hits in five innings of play and finished the day perfect on defense. Molly Smith continued to pitch well for the Tigers as she allowed just one hit in her complete game performance.

Regan Hadley / C / Sophomore / Georgetown, Ind.
Hadley hit her first home run of the year in game two of the DeMarini Desert Classic. Hadley finished the day going 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI.

Molly Smith / P / Junior / Yamhill, Ore
Smith improved to 2-1 after throwing a complete game one-hit shutout against Utah State. Smith struck out four while allowing just one walk to lower her season ERA to 0.79.

Lindsay Crowdus / CF / Senior / Houma, La.
Crowdus extended her hitting streak to seven games after recording a hit in each game today. Against Boise State, Crowdus hit her team-leading third triple of the season that drove in the lone Tiger run of the game. Crowdus also was perfect in stolen bases going 1-for-1.

Kyler Trosclair / SS / Junior / Houma, La.
Trosclair went 3-for-3 in stolen bases and finished the day 2-for-4 from the plate. Trosclair also led the team with two runs scored and two drawn walks.

- Top 1 – Kyler Trosclair led the team off with a walk and promptly stole second for her first of three stolen bases. Lindsay Crowdus, with one out, tripled through the left side and scored Trosclair. (1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 1 left on base)
- Bottom 2 – With two outs and runners on first and third, Boise State singled through the left side to score the game-tying run. (1 run, 4 hits, 0 errors, 3 left on base)
- Bottom 7 – A pinch-hit solo home run in the first at bat of the inning lifted the Broncos to the victory. (1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on base)
Game 2 | Memphis 8, Utah State 0
- Bottom 1 – Trosclair led the game off once again with a single and a stolen base for the Tigers. Hannah Harrell proceeded to get hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a ground ball by Crowdus. An error by the Utah State third baseman led to two runs scoring with two outs on a ball put in play by Lindsey Stickrod. Regan Hadley then hit a three-run home run to put the Tigers up 5-0. (5 runs, 2 hits, 1 error, 0 left on base)
- Bottom 5 – A single up the middle by Trosclair led off the fifth inning. A bunt single by Crowdus two batters later resulted it another Utah State throwing error and Trosclair coming around to score. Back-to-back singles by Addison Maxwell and Rebeca Melton scored the final two runs Memphis needed to win the game in five innings. (3 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors, 2 left on base)
