Senior outside hitter downed a career-high 33 kills Sunday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis senior Kelsea Bivins has been to the American Athletic Conference volleyball Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. It is Bivins' first conference accolade of her career.
Â
It is the third time this season the 6-foot outside hitter has been recognized for her play on the court. Earlier this campaign, Bivins was named to the all-tournament teams at the UT Martin Skyhawk and Tiger invitationals.
Â
Last weekend, Bivins helped Memphis to a 1-1 record with a 3-1 setback to Cincinnati and a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-2 win over ECU. Both matches were played at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Â
In the two matches, the Pelham, Ala., native logged 46 kills (5.11 kills/set), 13 digs, four total blocks and two service aces, while hitting .320. She had double-digit kills in both matches.
Â
Bivins' monster match of the weekend came against the Pirates Sunday. She logged a career-high 33 kills on a career-best 62 attempts. Bivins hit .419, her career-best percentage in a match with over 30 attempts.
Â
Bivins' 33 kills Sunday were the most by a Tiger in a match since 1995 campaign. The last time a Tiger had more kills in a match was on Oct. 27, 1995 when Monique Swaby downed 35 kills at Cincinnati. Bivins' 33 kills are the fourth-most for a match in Tigers volleyball history.
Â
She had 21 of her 33 kills in the final three sets – all won by Memphis – and posted nine kills in the deciding fifth set. In that last game, Bivins downed five kills in a stretch that turned a 10-6 deficit into a 12-all tie. With ECU serving with an 18-17 lead, Bivins' kill staved off a Pirates' match point and knotted the score at 18-all. Her next kill – her 33rd of the match – put Memphis ahead 20-19 and set up Anna Palmer's game-winning kill for the match victory.
Â
In the setback to Cincinnati, Bivins recorded double-figures kills with 13.
Â
With her performances this weekend, Bivins has logged double-digit kills in five of her last seven matches.
Â
The Tigers return to the court this weekend with road league matches at SMU Friday and Houston Sunday.
