Tigers thrower sets school record in men's discus.
DES MOINES, Iowa – What a way to exit center stage! In his final appearance as a University of Memphis student-athlete, Luke Vaughn saved his best for last.
Vaughn, wearing the Blue and Gray for the last time, broke his own school record and placed sixth in the men's discus at the 2018 USA Track and Field Championships Sunday. Drake University hosted the U.S. meet.
The East Peoria, Ill., native threw a school-record 207-1 (63.13m), surpassing his previous mark of 204-0 (62.18m) that he set at the Mt. SAC Relays in April. Vaughn had the top collegiate finish in Sunday's competition. He was one of eight collegians in the 18-man field.
As he did in the NCAA Championships, Vaughn made his third attempt of the opening round count. After two throws in the mid-190 range, Vaughn vaulted himself into the top-eight and into the event's final with his 207-1 (63.13m) on his third attempt. In the final round, he did not better his third attempt, including two fouls.
With his top-eight performance, Vaughn solidified himself as of the United States' best in the event and now, although not guaranteed, becomes a candidate for world teams and international competitions.Â
Earlier this month, Vaughn threw a 198-2 (60.41m) at the NCAA Championships and captured the men's discus crown. He won the title on his third throw attempt. It was Memphis' first track and field NCAA title since 1981 and the program's first outdoor championship since 1973.
