Regan Hadley and Ryleigh Aungst hit home runs against Michigan
BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Memphis softball team concluded its portion of the LSU Tournament Saturday with a pair of setbacks to Stanford and Michigan. The Cardinal defeated Memphis in game one by a score of 5-1 before Michigan won by a 4-2 margin. Memphis now returns home for the first time this season to host Mississippi State Wednesday night.
Â
The Tigers fall to 5-8 on the year with 19 of the next 20 scheduled games set to take place at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Â
Gracie Morton led the team offensively against Stanford, tallying two hits in the second spot in the line up. Baylee Smith, Regan Hadley, Alyssa Dean and Ashton Stowe also registered hits in game one of the day.
Â
Stanford scored three in the second and two in the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage over the Tigers. In the bottom half of the fourth, Hadley reached base by drawing a hit by pitch in the leadoff spot. Advancing to second on a fielding error, Hadley ultimately scored on an RBI-single by Stowe.
Â
Memphis' run in the fourth inning proved to be the only score of the contest for the Tigers. The Tigers finished the game with six hits compared to the five recorded by Stanford.
Â
Karli Perque was handed the loss against Stanford despite pitching for just one inning. Bayleigh Wisher, who came in second relief, hurled 5.0 innings in the circle for the Tigers. She finished with a pair of strikeouts and three hits allowed.
Â
Hadley extended her hitting streak to three games against the Wolverines with a solo shot in the top of the second inning, giving Memphis a 1-0 lead. Michigan promptly had a response with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Â
The Tigers gave up one more run in the bottom of the fourth to Michigan before an attempted comeback in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
Leading off in the seventh, freshman Ryleigh Aungst connected on her first collegiate home run to cut the Michigan lead down to two, 4-2. Memphis had one more base runner reach in the seventh, but back-to-back outs by the Michigan defense halted the Tigers comeback.
Â
Madalyn Alexander started against the Wolverines and put in three innings of work. Kailey Hilderbrand and Mariah Nichols also saw action against Michigan. In 2.1 innings of work in game two, Nichols held Michigan hitless while striking out two.
Â
