Memphis returns home where the Tigers have had much of their success this season, as Memphis has 10 of its 12 wins at FedExPark and is just 2-18 on the road. Memphis welcomes in USF, which played almost its entire non-conference schedule vs. teams from the Sunshine State. The Bulls were swept twice by Florida Gulf Coast but swept both Stetson and Florida A&M at home. USF played just three games against Power Five competition, as the Bulls were outscored 31-10 in a three-game sweep on the road against No. 6 Texas Tech. In American action, USF split with UCF at home, dropped three of four to the Knights on the road, split at Houston, and most recently, split a four-game series at home vs. Cincinnati.
The Bulls hold a 30-22 edge in the all-time series dating back to 1978, though Memphis won the lone series between the two programs in 2019, the most recent meetings. Prior to that, the Bulls had won two consecutive series vs. the Tigers.
USF has two of the top 10 offensive players in both home runs and RBIs in the AAC despite sitting second to last in scoring in the American. Though the Bulls sit seventh in the conference with 31 home runs, Roberto Pena has eight, good for T-8 in the conference, while Riley Hogan has seven, good for T-12. Hogan (29) has driven in the ninth most runs in the conference while Pena (29) sits 10th.
Starting pitching has been strong for the Bulls but not nearly as strong as the bullpen. USF's top five pitchers in ERA have all pitched solely or primarily out of the bullpen. Logan Lyle has given up just three earned runs in 24.0 innings, a 1.13 ERA. Caleb Pundsack (1.42), Dawson Barr (1.50), and Orion Kerkering (2.54) round out a dynamic quartet the Bulls have in their bullpen.
Game one of Friday's doubleheader as well as Saturday's matchup will be available on ESPN+. The series gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday at FedExPark.
