Tigers Continue AAC Play at Tulsa, Against Temple

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Tigers will get another shot at the Golden Hurricane when they kick off their week in Tulsa on Wednesday night before welcoming the Owls of Temple University on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off for Wednesday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's game in Elma Roane Fieldhouse is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m.
Memphis (11-5, 2-3 AAC) is coming off their second AAC win of the season when they took down the Cougars of the University of Houston this past Saturday. Madison Griggs and Emani Jefferson led the team with 13 points each while the Tiger defense shined in the fourth quarter, holding Houston to just four points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
For the season, Jamirah Shutes leads the team with 11.9 points per game while Tyler Frierson and Lanetta Williams have been dominant forces on the boards for the Tigers with 6.2 and 5.6 rebounds per game, respectively.
The Tigers have been one of the most dominating rebounding teams in the AAC and in Division I. Through 16 games, Memphis is ranked 33rd in the country and second in the AAC in rebound margin and is holding their opponents to under 60 points per game.
Tulsa (12-3, 2-2 AAC) will be playing in their first game in a week after their game against SMU on Saturday got postponed due to health and safety protocols.
The Golden Hurricane are coming off a nail-biting loss to South Florida that saw them control the lead for the majority of the game until the Bulls defense held Tulsa to nine points in the fourth quarter. South Florida would sink eight free throws in the final two minutes of the game and handed Tulsa the 66-63 loss.
For the season, the Mayberry duo, Wyvette and Maya, have been the dominating offensive forces for the Golden Hurricane with 14.7 and 14.2 points per game, respectively, while Temira Poindexter is adding in 11.7 points. Tulsa currently ranks second in Division I in three-point field goal percentage at 40.6%, sixth in turnovers per game (11.3) and seventh in assist-turnover ratio at 1.41.
Temple (8-7, 3-1 AAC) took the Bulls of South Florida to overtime in their most recent game.
Following a low-scoring first half, South Florida would command control in the third quarter, getting up by as much as seven. The Owls would fight back in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 59-59 after a lay-up from Mia Davis with seven seconds left that would force overtime.
The Bulls offense would charge through in the five-minute overtime and ended up handing Temple the 75-67 loss.
For the season, Mia Davis leads the team and the American Athletic Conference with 18.3 points per game and 7.4 rebounds while Alexa Williamson and Jiselle Thomas are adding in 11.0 and 10.4 points, respectively.
Temple will face-off against Cincinnati before making the trip down to Memphis.
