Mar 10, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team lost 5-1 on Friday night to Indiana State at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The Sycamores got a four-hit, complete-game performance out of starter Matt Jachec on the mound.
Memphis dropped its fourth-straight game and moved to 8-6 on the season while the Sycamores improved to 5-8 after playing a competitive opening-month schedule.
"We just have to get our guys in the right position to get them to play better, and that's on us as coaches," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "They got a good pitching performance, but unfortunately for us our hitters didn't make any adjustments, so it made what he did that much better. At this point, turn the page keep coaching them up and get ready to win a game tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A second-inning grand slam by the Sycamores with one out in the inning off the bat of Grant Magill was the major blow in the game, giving ISU a 4-0 lead early.
• RJ Jimerson singled in the bottom of the second and advanced to third on a Jake Curtis single through the left side. Jimerson came in to score when Curtis was caught stealing second base to trim the ISU lead to 4-1.
• An RBI-double by ISU's Randal Diaz gave the Sycamores an insurance run in the fourth inning to grow the lead back to four runs and make the score 5-1, holding the rest of the game.
• Indiana State starter Matt Jachec threw a four-hit complete game and racked up 10 strikeouts, keeping the Tigers off balance all night.
NOTABLES
• Left-handed pitcher Dalton Fowler made his fourth start of the season on the mound and took the loss to move to 1-2. After allowing the grand slam in the second, Fowler settled in. He ended with seven punch outs over four innings and allowed five earned runs, four coming on the grand slam.
• Jimerson ended 1-for-3 with a run scored.
• Brayland Skinner ended the game 1-for-3 with his sixth stolen base of the season.
• 6-foot-10 reliever Hudson Ross threw four one-hit innings of relief for the Tigers after Fowler exited. The redshirt-sophomore righty struck out six and allowed just the one base runner all night.
• Daniel Casto also threw a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth for Memphis.
