Tigers Drop Series to Sycamores
Mar 12, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team lost 5-2 on Sunday to Indiana State at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The Sycamores took all three games in the series by scores of 5-1, 7-3 and 5-2, respectively.
With the loss, Memphis slid to 8-8 on the season while the Sycamores improved to 7-8 and have now won five-straight games.
"Very disappointing weekend," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "At the end of the day, they played better baseball than we did all weekend. We have to continue to teach and develop the right culture, which will put us in a position to play better baseball as we move forward. Once that is instilled in them, we will be a very solid ball club."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead when Anthony Hansen lined an RBI single into center field that drove in Braden Webb.
• The Sycamores put the one blemish of the day on freshman starter Seth Garner in the fifth inning when ISU's Luis Hernandez gave them the lead with a two-run homerun.
• Indiana State added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to make the score 5-1.
• The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of hits (Webb, Benson) and a walk (Hansen), but were only able to plate one run in the inning when Webb came in from third to score on a Benson stolen base.
NOTABLES
• Garner made his fourth start of the season and turned in a strong performance over 6.1 innings. He allowed five hits and no walks while allowing just the two runs on the fifth-inning homerun.
• Cameron Benson went 3-for-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot.
• Hansen ended the game 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers head to Little Rock, Ark., for a mid-week game with UA-Little Rock on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
