Tigers Stun Rebels in Oxford Behind Ninth-Inning Magic
Apr 11, 2023 | Baseball
With the win, Memphis improved to 18-16 (2-4) on the season. The Rebels fell to 18-14 on the year with the loss.
"Great comeback win tonight," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We battled through some adversity but kept grinding and grinding until the ninth with a chance to tie it or take the lead and we did that. Great at-bats by those guys and then we bring in Dalton [Kendrick] and he shuts it down like he's done all year."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the first at-bat of the game, Anthony Hansen launched a solo shot into the home bullpen in right field to give the Tigers an immediate 1-0 lead. The home run for Hansen marked his third of the season against Ole Miss, after going 2-for-4 with a pair of solo shots in the first matchup between the two teams on April 4.
• Ole Miss catcher Calvin Harris tied the game at 1-1 with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the first.
• Jake Curtis slapped a triple down the right-field line that allowed Brennan DuBose to come all the way around from first to score and give Memphis a 2-1 lead in the second inning. It marked back-to-back games with a triple for Curtis.
• Austin Baskin led off the top of the third inning with his ninth double of the season to set up a hit-by-pitch by Cameron Benson and a Braden Webb walk to load the bases. Tyler Heckert grinded out a bases-loaded walk to force in Baskin, prompting a pitching change. Infield singles by DuBose and Curtis drove in three more Tigers to give them a 6-1 lead.
• The Rebels responded for four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth to make it a 6-6 game.
• Memphis regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Curtis came into score on a groundout by Baskin.
• Ole Miss wouldn't go down easy. After scoring a run on a passed ball, Rebel Anthony Calarco smashed a two-run home run to center field to give Ole Miss a 9-7 lead.
• Heading to the ninth down two runs, Hansen led the inning off with a single before Baskin smashed a game-tying, two-run bomb to left field. Before the Tigers dug out had settled down, Logan Kohler went opposite field to give Memphis the lead with a solo shot and Benson followed suit with another solo home run. When the dust settled, Memphis led 11-9.
• Dalton Kendrick came in and slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to earn his NCAA-leading ninth save of the season and clinch the Tiger win.
