Memphis Falls in Conference Opener to SMU

DALLAS, Texas – The Tigers fell 3-0 to SMU in their conference opener on Wednesday afternoon. Memphis (4-9) played a close first set, pushing it to 25-20, before struggling to put runs together against the Mustangs in set two and three. The Tigers recorded 26 kills with 19 errors and a .070 hitting percentage in the match.

SMU 3, Memphis 0
- Memphis and SMU began the first set, exchanging point for point, neither team able to put a run together. The Mustangs took a slight lead into the media timeout at 15-13.
- The Mustangs went on a 5-2 run after coming out of the timeout forcing a Tiger Timeout. Memphis was able to break up the run with a kill from Autumn Flynn and a service error from SMU. SMU would go on to take set one 25-20.
- The Mustangs got off to a quick lead in the second set, going on a 9-3 run, capitalizing off Memphis attacking errors.
- SMU continued to add to its lead with a big presence at the net, both offensively and defensively. The Tigers were able to put down some points, with kills from Hannah Jones and Eleftheria Baxa. SMU went on to take set two 25-10.
- The Mustangs opened set three on a 5-0 run, forcing a Tiger timeout. SMU added two more points before Memphis won its challenge, halting the Mustang run.
- Memphis put up a big-time block by Alexis Lewis and Jones midway through the third set, allowing the Tigers to try and close the gap. SMU would go on to take the third set 25-14.
- Flynn led the Tigers with a .417 hitting clip, her third straight match hitting over .400.
- Memphis was led in kills by Jordan Heatherly with seven, followed by Madison Rice-Locket and Flynn with six.
- Catalina Martinez led the Tigers with 10 digs in the match.
