Tigers Travel to UAB, Host East Carolina in Split Week

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team continues its American Athletic Conference play this week when it travels to Birmingham to take on the Blazers of UAB on Wednesday night before coming back to the Bluff City to play host to East Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
Wednesday's game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off while Saturday's contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start. Both games can be found on ESPN+.
Memphis (4-8, 0-1 AAC) is coming off a tough loss to Tulsa to start AAC play. The Tigers, who jumped out to an early lead to start the game, but the hot shooting of the Golden Hurricane could not be stopped as Memphis suffered the 71-62 loss.
Madison Griggs and Alasia Smith led the team, offensively, with 19 and 13 points, respectively, while Smith picked up her third double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds recorded. As a team, the Tigers scored 44 points in the paint.
For the season, Griggs has been the steady constant for Memphis in scoring with 17.3 points per game while Smith ranks in the top-five with her 101 total rebounds.
UAB (10-3, 1-0 AAC) is coming off its first conference win of the season after a 65-53 win over Florida Atlantic. The Blazers used a 21-point first quarter to gain an early lead in route to the victory. Denim DeShields, Maddie Walsh and Jade Weathersby all scored in double figures while Tracey Bershers and Mia Moore combined for 18 of the team's 40 rebounds.
Wednesday's match-up will be the 55th match-up between UAB and Memphis with the Tigers leading the all-time series 33-21. In the most recent meeting, Memphis came away with the 77-52 win after holding the Blazers to just 19 first-half points.
East Carolina (7-4) comes into the weekend off a game against the top-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks in Greenville. The Pirates were held to just 36 points and 19% shooting from the field for the contest.
Danae McNeal and Amiya Joyner have led the Pirates this season with a combined 30.7 points per game while Joyner leads the team with 95 rebounds and 20 blocks.
In the past, Memphis and East Carolina have matched up well against one another with the teams splitting the past six matchups.
East Carolina will play against UTSA before traveling to the Bluff City.
