Bulldogs Explosive Second Half Too Much for Tigers
Nov 07, 2024 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its second game of the season, the University of Memphis women's basketball team fell to Mississippi State 100-56.
The Bulldogs (1-0) jumped out to a quick lead, taking a 19-8 lead late in the first quarter following an 11-2 run that was capped off with a steal and layup by Denim Deshields.
Finishing out the final minutes, the Tigers (1-1) got a much-needed three-pointer from Tilly Boler to cut Memphis' deficit to 23-13.
Big three-pointers from Boler and Tanuyel Welch in the second quarter helped the Tigers cut their deficit to as little as six with just under four minutes left in the half, but the Bulldogs would get seven straight points from Chandler Prater to push the State lead back out to double digits.
A quick transition lay-up from Hannah Riddick in the final minute of the second quarter made it a 36-26 Mississippi State advantage heading into halftime.
In the first 20 minutes of the game, Memphis forced the Bulldogs into seven turnovers while holding them to just two long-range buckets.
It was all Mississippi State in the second half; the Bulldogs put together a 64-point second half while shooting 63% from the field.
Memphis heated up from long range in the fourth quarter, getting three-pointers from Boler, Alasia Smith and Tamya Smith. But State's lead was too much to catch as the Tigers suffered the 100-56 loss.
Tilly Boler led the team with 23 points while hitting four long range shots while Alasia Smith added in 10 points. Quinzia Fulmoregrabbed a team-best eight rebounds while Smith and Hannah Riddick both recorded five rebounds, each.
Memphis is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 10 when it hosts Samford in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage of the game available on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis.
