Dec 08, 2024 | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Memphis women's basketball was defeated by Southern Miss, 82-69, on Sunday afternoon inside Reed Green Coliseum.
Tilly Boler led the way for the Tigers with 22 points, her fourth 20-point game of the young season. Alasia Smith poured in 16 points to go with nine rebounds and a steal, and Layken Cox scored 10 points in her first start of the year for the injured Quinzia Fulmore.
The Tigers took an early 10-2 lead behind three-pointers from Boler and Elauna Eaton, but the Lady Eagles responded with a 21-6 run to finish the first quarter with a 23-16 lead thanks to 50% field goal shooting.
Memphis shot 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from deep in the first half but was plagued by 13 turnovers that resulted in 22 points for the hosts. Boler's 15 points were the most by any Tiger in a half this season.
Southern Miss used four third-quarter threes to extend their lead to as high as 18 points, but buckets from Smith and Boler kept the lead at 14 headed into the final stanza. The Tigers pressed aggressively and forced 13 total turnovers on the day but were unable to trim the deficit below 10.
Both teams had exactly 12 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive rebounds, marking the second time this season the rebounding battle was a stalemate. Memphis shot 82% from the charity stripe and 42.8% from the field.
The Tigers will conclude their road trip on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Troy. The game will tip at 2:00 pm and be broadcast on ESPN+.
