Mar 09, 2024 | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.V. – University of Memphis sophomore Gabriela Zych finished up competition at the 2024 NCAA Rifle Championships in Morgantown, W.V. on Saturday.
Zych placed 10th in smallbore on Friday with a score of 586 and took 21st in air rifle on Saturday with a total of 593.
"Gabriela had a great couple of days and I'm very impressed with how she shot both of her matches," Memphis head coach Morgan Phillips said. "This is not an easy match to shoot, but she stuck to her plan and was very consistent all the way through. The experience she gained this weekend is invaluable and I know it will help her in the future. She has had a great year and I'm very proud of her."
2023-24 was a breakout year for Zych, who earned First-Team All-GARC in smallbore, air rifle and combined – just one of three student-athletes in the conference to accomplish the feat.
At the NCAA Championships, Zych was named the recipient of the Elite 90 award, becoming the first Memphis student-athlete, regardless of sport, to earn the prestigious honor.
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Zych had one of the best individual seasons in program history this year, leading the team with averages of 586.786 in smallbore, 595.357 in air rifle and 1182.143 in aggregate. Over the course of the season, she set the program records in both smallbore and aggregate and tied the school mark in air rifle. Zych also earned berths to compete in both smallbore and air rifle at the 2024 NCAA Rifle Championships.
