Tigers Drops Series Opener to East Carolina

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped a close series opener to East Carolina, 4-3, on Friday night at Tiger Softball Complex.
The Tigers (6-38, 1-21 AAC) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third off a two-run homer over center field from Zoe Adebayo, her fourth of the season, before giving up two more runs to the Pirates (34-16, 10-12 AAC) in the top of the seventh inning.
East Carolina 4, Memphis 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
• East Carolina got on the board first homering over the left centerfield fence in the first at-bat of the game.
• Kennedy Semien tallied the Tigers' first hit of the game sending a one-out single to the pitcher before being left stranded in the bottom of the first.
• The Pirates doubled the lead as Kanisha Anderson sent a sacrifice fly down the left field line in the top of the second frame.
• Kelsie Adams opened the bottom of the third with a stand-up double to the left field wall. Adams advanced on a sac-bunt before scoring on a wild pitch. Memphis took the lead off a two-RBI home run to center field from Zoe Adebayo.
• The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning but the Tigers avoided giving up a run as Semien and Marley Maness connected on a fielder's choice followed by a groundout to the pitcher.
• East Carolina took a late lead putting up two runs in the top of the seventh, drawing a bases loaded walk followed by Johnson reaching on a wild pitch.
NOTABLES
• Four Tigers recorded hits in the game: Taniyah Brown (2), Adebayo, Semien and Adams.
• Memphis tallied three runs from Adebayo, Semien and Adams.
• Adebayo went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a home run, her fourth of the season.
• Abigail Morgan got the start in the circle going five innings while recording two strikeouts against the Pirates. Brown entered as relief going two innings with three strikeouts.
