Memphis Drops Game One to Wichita State

WICHITA, Kansas – The University of Memphis softball team dropped its first of three games to Wichita State 8-3 on Friday night at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita, Kansas.
The Tigers (6-41, 1-24 AAC) put up a fight against the Shockers (23-21, 14-11 AAC) putting up hits, including a two-run shot over center field off the bat of McKaylee Polk, however they were unable to capitalize on their base runners.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kennedy Semien drew a walk to open the game for the Tigers before advancing to second and third on wild pitches. Semien would be left stranded to close the half inning.
• Wichita State got on the board first putting up four runs, including a three-run long ball over left field, in the bottom of the second.
• Semien recorded Memphis' first hit of the game, doubling to left field, her third of the season, before being left on base to close the top of the third frame.
• The Shockers added to their advantage as Bailey Urban reached home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third.
• The Tigers cut the lead in the top of the fourth frame as Polk fired off a two-run shot over the center field wall.
• Wichita State added a run to its advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 6-2.
• Memphis cut the lead once again as Semien's single hopped over the right fielder's head allowing Kelsie Adams to reach home in the top of the fifth frame.
• The Shockers added a pair of runs to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
NOTABLES
• Six Tigers recorded hits in the game: Polk (2), Semien (2), Aaliyah Dixon, Drue Thomas, Zoe Adebayo and Presley Morris.
• Memphis tallied three runs against Polk, Adebayo and Adams.
• Polk went 2-for-3 with a homer, her fourth of the season, and two RBI.
• Taniyah Brown got the start in the circle going three innings while recording two punch outs against the Shockers. Abigail Morgan entered in relief in the bottom of the fourth. Morgan finished the game with three innings of work.
