Tigers to Host UTSA and Rice in Conference Action

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis volleyball returns to American Conference action this weekend as UTSA and Rice visit Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers take on the Roadrunners on Friday night at 7 p.m. before facing the Owls on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (9-7, 1-1 American) enters the weekend after dropping a nonconference match to Southern Illinois on Wednesday.
Abigail Schlueter reached a career milestone, recording her 1,000th dig and finishing the night with 1,005, the most among active American Conference players. She surpassed Florida Atlantic's Isabelle Northam, who sits at 1,002.
Janyah Henderson paced the Tiger offense with eight kills and 10 points, while Za'Niya Boyles was a perfect 5-for-5 on attack attempts.
Setters Maddy Bach (13) and Sydney Marshall (12) both tallied double-digit assists in the match.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
UTSA (8-5, 1-1 American) split its opening conference weekend, falling to Tulsa before rebounding with a win over Charlotte.
Ally Tribe and Taylor Gaines lead the Roadrunner attack with a combined 285 kills, including back-to-back double-digit performances from Tribe.
Setter Megan Hawkins posted 20 assists against Charlotte and 26 against Tulsa, giving her seven matches this season with 20 or more assists. On the season, Hawkins has registered 257 assists.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
Rice (5-8, 1-1 American) also split its first weekend of conference play, falling to Temple before edging Tulsa in five sets. The Owls travel to UAB on Friday before heading to Memphis on Sunday.
Taylor Preston was named American Conference Offensive Player of the Week after back-to-back 25-plus kill outings. She ranks fifth in the league with 192 kills, averaging 4.17 per set.
Setter Savanah Skopal dished out 55 assists against Temple, the third-most in the American this season, just shy of Bach's 58 against Chattanooga on Sept. 11.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UTSA AND RICE
Friday marks the fourth time that Memphis and UTSA have faced each other with the Tigers won the previous matchup last season in San Antonio, Texas in four-sets.
Memphis and Rice have faced off 11 times, with the Owls winning each of the last four. The Tigers' last victory over Rice came in 2010 in Houston, while their last home win over the Owls was in 2007.
