Tigers Secure Season Finale Win at East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Memphis (11-20, 2-14 American) defeated East Carolina (12-15, 4-12 American) in four sets Sunday afternoon inside Williams Arena to finish the regular season with a victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled through a tight opening set, trading points until East Carolina put together a 7-0 run fueled by several Tiger attack errors, a kill from Kai Bailey, and a block from Ekwe Anwah and Bailey. Memphis responded with kills from Brianna Washington and Jasmyn Tate to close the gap, but the Pirates capitalized on four Tiger service errors and late kills from Anwah, Bailey and Violet Hakan to take the set, 25-21.
The Pirates opened the second set on a 5-2 run before Za'Niya Boyles sparked a 3-0 Memphis response to tie the frame at five. Both teams continued to exchange momentum with back-to-back 3-0 runs. A kill from Hakan started a 7-0 East Carolina run that pushed the Pirates ahead, 19-14, but the Tigers roared back with a 7-0 run of their own behind kills from Zaniah Hoskins and Janayah Henderson to take the set, 25-23.
Memphis carried that momentum into the third set, jump-starting with a 5-0 run behind kills from Hoskins and Henderson. East Carolina fought back with swings from Carlia Northcross and Hakan before adding a 3-0 run with kills from Allison Butrum and Northcross. The Tigers answered with a 4-0 burst featuring Tate, Hoskins and Henderson to maintain control. Memphis closed the frame on a 6-0 run to take the 2-1 match lead with a dominant 25-14 win.
In the fourth, Memphis opened with a 5-1 run while capitalizing on Pirate attack errors and a service ace. East Carolina used three Tiger miscues to pull back within one. Both sides traded points and exchanged 3-0 runs in a back-and-forth stretch, but Memphis used consecutive 3-0 runs fueled by Washington, Henderson and Hoskins to close out the set and secure the match, 25-23.

NOTABLES
- This marks the first conference win for the Tigers since Sept. 26 at Tulane in four sets.
- This marks the first win since Oct. 16 when the Tigers swept Alabama A&M.
- Zaniah Hoskins led the offense with 21 kills for her conference high.
- Hoskins' 314 kills are the seventh-most by a freshman in program history and the most since a pair of Tigers, Kate Gibson and Oluchi Agomuo, recorded marks of 380 and 335, respectively, during their freshman campaigns in 2014.
- The freshman set a new career high in points with 22.5.
- Hoskins has now recorded 20-plus kills in three matches this season.
- Janyah Henderson followed with a conference high of 14 kills and 17 points.
- Henderson put up 10-plus kills in eight matches this season.
- The middle blocker also recorded five blocks included one solo block.
- Maddy Bach helped the offense with 42 assists for her conference high.
- This marks her third match with 40-plus assists, with her most recent performance being a 47-assist match against Lamar on Sept. 12.
- The freshman has tied her career in aces for the fifth time with two in the win.
- Three Tigers put up double-dights in digs: Bach (13), Mandy Lawson (13) and Abigail Schlueter (10).
- Lawson's 13 digs were a new career high.
- Lawson also tied her conference high in service aces with one.
- Abigail Schlueter set her season high in assists with four.
- Schlueter led the team in aces with three during the match to give her 103 career service aces.
