Feb 24, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set for its first double mid-week slate of the season as the Tigers welcome Alabama A&M to FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. before traveling to Little Rock for a 3:05 p.m. game on Wednesday.
Tuesday's game will be available via audio stream on GoTigersGo.com with Jeff Brightwell on the call. Wednesday's game vs. Little Rock will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Tuesday's game vs. the Bulldogs will be the second-ever meeting between Memphis and Alabama A&M, with the Tigers taking the lone game of the series by score of 5-3 (3/1/22). Wednesday's clash with the Trojans in Little Rock will be the 55th all-time meeting between the programs with Memphis leading 42-12 in the all-time series.
Memphis (4-2) is coming off its second-straight series win to begin the season after taking down SEMO two games to one on opening weekend before taking two-of-three games from Valpo over the weekend.
Alabama A&M will enter Tuesday with a record of 2-5 overall. The Bulldogs most recently went 1-2 at the MLB Andre Dawson Classic in Vero Beach, Florida, over the weekend, defeating Prairie View A&M 7-4 before dropping games to Grambling State and Florida A&M.
The Tigers will roll out RHP Charlie Smith to make his Memphis debut on the mound vs. Alabama A&M on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will counter with a 'Charlie' of their own – RHP Charlie Lazo – who will also be making his season debut.
The Bulldogs enter Tuesday led offensively by Trey Rutledge (.500 AVG., 6 SB) and Charles Morris (.333 AVG., 4 RBI).
Redshirt-junior INF Shane Cox has led the Tigers offensively through the first two weeks of the season. The Munford, Tenn., native is slashing .381 / .409 / .952 for a staggering 1.361 OPS, thanks to seven extra-base hits (2 HR, 4 2B, 1 3B). His six RBI are second most on the team behind only James Smith IV (8).
After ranking 12th nationally with 54 double plays turned a season ago, the Tigers have turned nine through the season's first six games and rank seventh nationally in that category (No. 1 AAC).
The Memphis pitching staff has been another highlight to the start of the season, combining for a 3.00 ERA to lead The American and rank top 40 nationally.
Three-base hits have also been common through the first six games of the year as the Tigers have already recorded three (No. 22 in NCAA, No. 2 AAC) after totaling just six a season ago.
Looking ahead at the Trojans of Little Rock (3-3), they will enter Wednesday's matchup after a Monday game at UL-Monroe. The Trojans are coming off being swept at Nicholls in three games in Thibodaux, La., over the weekend.
Little Rock is led offensively by Ryan Geck (.348 AVG., 3 2B, 5 RBI) and Zach Henry (.348 AVG., 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 SB).
Starting pitchers for Wednesday's matchup at Little Rock will be announced at a later time.
