Mar 27, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to host its first American Athletic Conference series of the season at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field, kicking off a three-game set with Charlotte on Friday night.
Friday's first pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. and can be streamed live on GoTigersGo.com with Jeff Brightwell on the call. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m., followed by the Sunday finale at 1:05 p.m. Games two and three will both be available on ESPN+ with Brightwell on the call and analyst Greg Gaston alongside.
FedExPark will be hosting 901 Weekend during the three-game series, featuring Brews & BBQ on Friday night ($2 beer and $2 off BBQ items), Baseball Bingo on Saturday and Camper Day for Sunday's finale.
FedExPark will play host to the 31st, 32nd and 33rd all-time meetings between the two programs. Charlotte leads the all-time series, 18-12, sweeping the Tigers in Charlotte last season. Memphis will look to snap a seven-game losing skid vs. the 49ers, dating back to 2003.
Memphis (11-13, 0-3 AAC) is coming off its conference-opening weekend where the Tigers dropped three games in Greenville, N.C., to preseason American Athletic Conference favorite East Carolina. The Tigers battled hard in a one-run Friday night loss and a 3-1 defeat on Saturday before falling to the Pirates 11-1 in Sunday's finale.
The Tigers followed that up with a midweek trip to Oxford, Mississippi, to square off with No. 15 Ole Miss on Tuesday night with the Rebels coming away with a 7-5 victory. Third baseman Will Vasseur hit a two-run home run for his first as a Tiger. RHP Hayden Donahue threw a pair of hitless innings and punched out four Rebels while throwing up zeroes and allowing just a single base runner (HBP).
Memphis will roll out a weekend rotation of RHP Seth Garner (2-2, 4.65 ERA), followed by left-handers David Case (1-3, 4.82 ERA) and Isaac Lucas (2-0, 3.95 ERA). Charlotte will counter with RHP Blake Gillespie (2-3, 4.54 ERA) on Friday, RHP Andrew Kribbs (1-1, 5.16 ERA) on Saturday and a starter to be announced later for Sunday.
The 49ers (11-12, 1-2 AAC) opened AAC action last weekend with a home series against UTSA (20-7, 2-1 AAC). Charlotte got a 3-2 win on Friday night before dropping games two and three, 10-3 and 6-5. The 49ers hosted Campbell on Tuesday night and dropped that matchup as well, 14-4 in seven innings.
Charlotte is led offensively by Cody Gunderson (.412 AVG. / 5 HR / 16 RBI) and Carson Bayne (.244 AVG. / 5 HR / 25 RBI).
Tiger catcher Jonah Sutton leads the country in runners thrown out from behind the plate (14). Sutton is one of seven catchers nationally to have thrown out 12-plus runners and is now 14-of-30 (47%) from behind the dish. On the flip side, Charlotte has stolen just nine bases as a team on the season (9-for-20). The weekend series will feature a pair of great defensive catchers as Charlotte's Logan Poteet has thrown out a dozen runners himself to rank top seven nationally.
After ranking 12th nationally with 54 double plays turned a season ago, the Tigers have turned 21 through the season's first 24 games and rank 27th nationally in that category.
The Memphis pitching staff has been another highlight to the start of the season, combining for a 4.44 ERA (206.2 IP) to rank third in The American and 56th nationally. The Tiger bullpen has accounted for 108.2 of those innings and has given up just 47 earned runs for a bullpen ERA of 3.89.
