Tigers Drop Home Conference Opener to Charlotte
Mar 28, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped its first home American Athletic Conference game of the season on Friday night, falling 7-1 to Charlotte at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field.
The Tigers moved to 11-14 (0-4 AAC) on the season while the 49ers improved to 12-12 (2-2 AAC).
"I thought we came out and had the right energy, we're coming out and competing," head coach Matt Riser said. "I thought the flip of the game was bases loaded, nobody out … Daniel [Perez] grinded out a good at-bat with a liner to center to get the man in from third. It was a fantastic at-bat to set us up to do something, and then we had a pair of poor at-bats back-to-back. You have to be able to score more than one with the bases loaded and nobody out."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• RHP Seth Garner got the start on the mound and gave the Tigers one of his best outings of the season, throwing up zeroes for the first five frames.
• Memphis struck first, getting on the board on a sac-fly from Daniel Perez after loading the bases to start the bottom of the fifth.
• Garner ran into his first trouble of the night in the top of the sixth. A two-out single followed by a double and a pair of Tiger errors allowed the 49ers to grab a 2-1 lead.
• Charlotte's Dawson Bryce made it a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning with a two-run home run to left-center field. Bryce added an RBI single in the eighth inning to make the score 5-1, 49ers.
• Charlotte center fielder Carson Bayne slugged a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the ninth to make it a 7-1 game, which held to be final.
NOTABLES
• Senior outfielder Chase Nixon had a 3-for-3 night at the plate and was on base four times, adding a walk. The three-hit game was his second of the season and marked his seventh multi-hit effort.
• Garner went six innings and allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits, walking just one and striking out six. He was tagged with the loss to go to 2-3 on the season.
• Perez ended the night 1-for-3 and drove in a run with a sac-fly. He extended his hit streak to three games.
• James Smith IV ended the night 1-for-4.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at FedExPark tomorrow afternoon for game two of the series against Charlotte with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
