Apr 01, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to Mississippi State, 5-3, on Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in front of the fourth-largest crowd in FedExPark history (1,511; opened 2010).
The Tigers moved to 11-17 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 17-12 overall.
"Fantastic crowd and great environment tonight," head coach Matt Riser said. "I thought we showed up tonight … We had opportunities. We scored early with a big two-out knock from [Cade] Tucker. I was really pleased with what he did there. We had more opportunities late and I thought we executed some things to put ourselves in a position to win … We just have to be better and find a way to get out of this."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers got on the board with a two-out, infield single by James Smith IV before Cade Tucker delivered a two-run single into center field to put Memphis up three.
• Junior RHP Caden Robinson made his seventh start of the season on the mound and had one of his best performances as a Tiger. The right-hander retired 10-straight Bulldogs from the end of the first through the middle of the fourth inning before allowing his first hit of the game – a two-out solo shot by Mississippi State's Hunter Hines to put the Bulldogs on the board.
• In the top of the sixth, Bulldog Ace Reese flew out to center field to drive in Dylan Cupp with a sac-fly and trim the Memphis lead to a run. Later in the inning, Mississippi State starting pitcher turned designated hitter, Noah Sullivan, tied the game at three runs apiece with a two-out solo shot
• The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Sawyer Reeves and added a run to their lead in the eighth on another RBI single by Nolan Stevens.
• The Tigers strung together back-to-back, one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth by Chase Nixon and Smith IV but were unable to bring either runner home.
• Memphis went down quietly in the ninth and Mississippi State hung on to win, 5-3.
NOTABLES
• The attendance of 1,511 marked the fourth-largest crowd in FedExPark history (opened 2010) and fifth-largest crowd ever for an on-campus baseball game.
• Memphis tallied eight hits in the loss – all eight hits were singles.
• Smith IV ended the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and his eighth stolen base of the season.
• Robinson turned in one of the best starts of his three-year Tiger career, going five innings and allowing two runs on just two hits to go along with six strikeouts and just one walk.
• Tucker ended the night 1-for-3 with a two-run single.
• Carter McKay, Cy Turner, Daniel Perez, Creek Robertson and Chase Nixon all recorded a hit. Perez also stole a base and scored a run.
