MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's basketball officially announced the signing of impact transfer guard Dug McDaniel, head coach Penny Hardaway announced Monday afternoon.
McDaniel, one of the most dynamic and skilled guards in the nation, will join the Tigers' roster in 2025-26, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to the Bluff City.
A 5-foot-11 native of Washington, D.C., McDaniel has spent three collegiate seasons with Michigan (2022-24) and Kansas State (2024-25). He has made 92 appearances - 75 starts - while averaging 11.8 points (39.1% FG, 32.6% 3PT), 4.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game for the Wolverines and Wildcats.
Known for his ability to create opportunities for his teammates, McDaniel's versatility on both sides of the ball will strengthen the Tigers' backcourt.
McDaniel has led his teams in assists in all three seasons, totaling 401 career dimes for an average of 4.3 per game.
This past season for K-State, McDaniel averaged 11.4 points (37.8 FG%), 4.9 assists (fifth in the Big 12), 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. He drew 23 starts in 32 games played and led the Wildcats in assists (158), steals (54), field goals attempted (384) and total minutes played (1,032). He was second on the squad in double-digit scoring efforts (21), 20-point games (3) and field goals made (145), and scored a season-high 24 points against No. 13 Arizona in February.
McDaniel's 158 assists were fifth-most in a single season in school history and he dished out at least five assists in 18 games.
Before arriving in Manhattan, Kansas, McDaniel spent the two previous campaigns at Michigan, where he quickly established himself as one of the top point guards in the country. He led the Wolverines in scoring (16.3 ppg), 3-point field goals (56), assists (4.7 apg), steals (1.1 spg) and minutes (35.4 mpg) as a sophomore in 2023-24.
As a freshman in 2022-23, McDaniel helped lead the Wolverines to an 18-16 overall record and a trip to the second round of the postseason NIT behind 8.6 points, 3.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. He has consistently put up strong assist
Across both seasons in Ann Arbor, he averaged 12.0 points on 40% shooting (255-of-639), 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 32.8 minutes per game. He connected on 89 three-pointers (36.3%) and played in 60 of a possible 66 games with 52 starts.
McDaniel was a consensus Top 100 recruit out of St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly, Virginia, leading the Panthers to a 31-5 record and VISAA (Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Association) Division I State Championship as a senior in 2021-22. He was the DMV Elite All-Northern Virginia Player of the Year and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Player of the Year as well as a VISAA Division I All-State First Team selection in 2022.
McDaniel led Paul VI to an 85-22 record in his prep career (not counting the shortened 2020-21 COVID-19 season), including two VISAA Division I State Championships (2020, 2022) and a pair of WCAC Tournament titles.
