CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Memphis track and field was well-represented on the podium at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, logging 11 top-three finishes highlighted by victories from Oageng Mdlela (men's triple jump) and Sascha Salesius Schmidt (men's shot put).Â
Mdlela jumped a career-best 15.85 meters to win the triple jump for the first time at Memphis. Schmidt cruised to his third consecutive AAC shot put championship behind an 18.53-meter throw that cleared the next-best mark by 1.24 meters. He's the third men's athlete in conference history to win three conference championships in the shot put and the second at Memphis (Iason Machairas).Â
Five more Tigers contributed to program records at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, starting with Prior Ochonogor who destroyed his prior record in the 400-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 49.87. To conclude the three-day competition, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Bryson Wilson, Ochonogor, Kouto Anyika and Courtland Noble posted a riveting, second-place performance, going toe-to-toe with South Florida and breaking their own school record in 3:06.02.Â
The men finished third in the conference on the weekend in total points – their best finish since 2018 – and the women finished fifth behind a second-place finish from Dejona Simpson (400 meters) and third place finishes from Gizel Clayton (100-meter hurdles), Jazmyn James (discus) and Judy Elful (400-meter hurdles). The 4x100-meter relay team of Clayton, Kameron Scille, Destiny Jenkins and Kaseiana Meriweather also earned a third-place spot.Â
Vincent Chenier concluded his incredible running career with another third-place finish in the men's 1500 meters, his third conference podium appearance.
