May 02, 2025 | General
MEMPHIS, Tenn - University of Memphis Senior Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ed Scott, Ph.D. was named the staff honoree of the American Athletic Conference's newly named Marlon Dechausay Unity Awards, as announced by The American's Leadership and Engagement Committee on Friday morning.Â
Scott was presented the Marlon Dechausay Unity Award at the 11th Annual PAWSCARS on Wednesday evening after being nominated by Director of Student-Athlete Development Destin Gilbert.Â
The Together We Stand Awards were renamed after Dechausay, who served as the Memphis senior associate athletic director for student-athlete welfare and tragically passed away in December 2024. In a 20-year career spanning seven institutions, Dechausay was instrumental in helping student-athletes achieve success in the competitive arena, in the classroom and in the community.Â
"It is a tremendous honor to be presented the Marlon Dechausay Unity Award," Senior Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ed Scott, Ph.D. said. "Marlon was a friend, colleague and dedicated advocate for the student-athletes he interacted with throughout his career. I humbly accept this award as we honor Marlon and will continue to proudly represent his legacy."
The Marlon Dechausay Unity Awards was presented to one current student-athlete as well as one current institutional staff member. Nominees exemplify Marlon's passion, integrity and dedication to leadership in collegiate athletics. The award recognizes individuals who create meaningful opportunities, uplift those around them, and champion the growth and success of both student-athletes and staff.Â
Scott's ability to cultivate inclusive spaces within collegiate athletics has made a lasting impact on both student-athletes and professionals in the field, and his work at Memphis has set a precedent for leadership, advocacy and integrity that will continue to inspire future generations. Like his close friend and colleague Dechausay, Scott has been a fierce advocate and mentor at Memphis, guiding countless individuals toward success and inspiring transformative change within the industry.
Dechausay's work on The American's then-Inclusion Excellence and Student-Athlete Advisory committees helped countless student-athletes enjoy a more meaningful and rewarding experience, and in 2023 he was the inaugural staff recipient of The American's Together We Stand Award for his contributions to unity and inclusion across the conference.
The winner of the Marlon Dechausay Unity Aware for a student-athlete was Tulane's Janae Dean, a member of the women's track and field/cross country programs. Volleyball student-athlete Madison Rice-Locket, who was also recognized at the PAWSCARS award ceremony, was the institutional nominee from Memphis.Â
