May 02, 2025 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway has added another piece to the Tigers' 2025-26 roster with the signing of 6-foot-8 guard Hasan Abdul Hakim, a versatile and experienced playmaker who most recently played at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
Abdul Hakim, who hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, arrives in Memphis with one season of eligibility remaining. Despite his size, Abdul Hakim is listed as a guard, reflecting his skill set and ability to impact the game across different areas of the floor.
In the 2024-25 season, Abdul Hakim averaged 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game for UTRGV, while shooting 48% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range. He appeared in 12 games and started nine before leaving the team in January. Nevertheless, Abdul Hakim led the Vaqueros in points and rebounds per game through mid-January and proved himself on the biggest stages.
Among his standout performances were a 26-point, 11-rebound double-double against No. 15 Creighton and a 19-point, 8-rebound outing at No. 19 Wisconsin.
Over his two seasons (32 games, 23 starts) at UTRGV, Abdul Hakim posted consistent production, averaging 13.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 34.4% from long range.
Prior to his Division I career, Abdul Hakim developed his game over three seasons at the junior college level, playing at Santa Fe College (2020–22) in Gainesville, Florida, and the College of Southern Idaho (2022–23) in Twin Falls, Idaho.
Abdul Hakim is the 10th player Hardaway has signed to the 2025 recruiting class, joining Daniel Vieira-Tuck, Felipe Patino, Quante Berry (Temple), Dug McDaniel (Kansas State), Aaron Bradshaw (Ohio State), Julius Thedford (Western Kentucky), Ashton Hardaway (Saint Mary's), Zachary Davis (South Carolina) and Sincere Parker (McNeese State).
