New York Mets Select Smith IV in 2025 MLB Draft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis RHP James Smith IV was selected by the New York Mets in the 14^th round of the 2025 MLB Draft with the 433^rd overall pick.

Smith IV was named to the 2025 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List on April 15 during his lone season as a Tiger, also shining at the plate and in center field. He hit .277 with 12 extra-base hits and eight stolen bases in 29 games during the 2025 season.

He becomes the first Memphis player to be selected since the 2023 MLB Draft when pitchers Dalton Fowler (Round 9, Pick 273, Tampa Bay Rays) and Dalton Kendrick (Round 18, Pick 534, Los Angeles Angels) were both selected. Overall, Smith becomes the 84^th draft pick in program history.
