Hoskins Notches 22 Kills as Tigers Sweep Mississippi Valley State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (8-5) earned a straight-set victory over Mississippi Valley State (3-5) Tuesday night in Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Efficient attacking and a dominant performance from freshman Zaniah Hoskins were the key factors as Memphis snapped a three-match losing streak prior to beginning American Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening set began with a back-and-forth sequence ending with Memphis narrowly leading, 9-8. After a service error by the Devilettes, Taylor Hampton stepped up to the service line on what became a 4-0 run for the Tigers, highlighted by two kills from Zaniah Hoskins. Mississippi Valley State (MVSU) was able to draw the set within two before another Memphis run of six points put the Tigers on the brink of set point. Kills from Za'Niya Boyles and Riley McCloskey helped Memphis take the first set, 25-16.
Memphis stormed out to a commanding 11-4 lead in the second set and never led by less than three throughout the remainder of the set. The Tigers led by as much as 10 in the second frame and quelled a late six-point run by the Devilettes to take the second set, 25-20. Zaniah Hoskins led the Memphis offense through the first two sets, recording 14 of Memphis' 30 kills across the first and second sets.
The third and final set began with a tightly-contested battle as Memphis held a 12-10 lead before going on a 6-1 run to stretch its lead to seven. Memphis closed out the final set with a 6-0 run to earn the sweep with Sydney Marshall at the service line. A pair of freshmen, Zaniah Hoskins and Riley McCloskey, had kills that helped the Tigers take the set and match.

- The Tigers recorded their highest team hitting percentage in a home match this season, finishing with a .396 percentage.
- Memphis' single-match high is a .407 hitting percentage against Texas Southern.
- Memphis also recorded its highest number of team kills in a three-set match with 49 in tonight's victory.
- Zaniah Hoskins set new career highs with 22 kills and 22 points in the victory.
- It was the first 20-plus kill performance by a Memphis freshman since Sam Drewry had 20 kills against Southern Illinois on Jan. 22, 2021.
- A trio of freshmen, Riley McCloskey, Camryn McCollum and Brianna Washington, all recorded career highs in kills in the match.
- McCloskey recorded seven kills with her previous high being five kills against Alabama.
- McCollum's six kills surpassed a previous career high of five against Lamar.
- Washington's nine kills were the most in her career after previously having three seven-kill performances against Denver, Idaho State and Alabama.
- Sydney Marshall and Maddy Bach featured evenly in the contest, with Marshall finishing with 20 assists and Bach with 17.
- Marshall finished with five points from two kills, two service aces and one solo block.
- Sydney Marshall recorded a season high with 19 assists, leading Memphis for the first time this season.
- Abigail Schlueter led Memphis with 12 digs in the win, giving her 969 digs in her collegiate career.
