Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome in Memphis' Loss at Tulane
Feb 19, 2026 | Women's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Memphis women's basketball was defeated at Tulane, 69-54, on Thursday night at Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Tigers (8-18, 2-11 American) built an early 8-2 lead, but a massive run from the hosts put them into control. Tamya Smith had a game-high 20 points, and Paris Gaines grabbed 10 rebounds; it's the first time this season that Memphis has lost when winning the rebounding battle.
Memphis scored four consecutive field goals early on to grab an 8-2 advantage, but Tulane (10-16, 5-9 American) responded with a run that would define the game. For the remainder of the quarter, the Green Wave went on a 19-1 explosion to lead, 21-9, after 10 minutes. In the final five minutes of the quarter, the Tigers scored just one free throw and missed 10 consecutive baskets.
After six turnovers in the first frame, Tulane trimmed it down to two and was able to build on their lead. 20 first-half points marked the lowest in Memphis' season as they shot just 27.6% from the field.
The Tigers won the second half, 34-30, but could never get the game within single digits despite an eight-point fourth quarter from Smith. The Green Wave had another impressive day at the charity stripe, getting their 20 times and converting 16.
Four Tulane players recorded 10 or more points, led by Mecailin Marshall with 15. Dyllan Hanna added 12 rebounds, and Shiloh Kimpson had 10 assists.
The 14 turnovers forced by Memphis were the lowest figure this season, snapping a 26-game streak of seven or more steals. Cori Allen recorded three of the four steals, but the Green Wave cut their turnover total from 24 to 14 from Tuesday night's contest.
The Tigers will remain on the road this weekend, battling Temple on Sunday, February 22, at 1 p.m.
