Tigers’ Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Northwestern

Memphis, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's tennis team suffered a narrow 2-4 defeat to Northwestern at Leftwich Tennis Center on Sunday.

Tiger duo Obrad Markovski/Marko Milosavljevic picked up a win to start the day at line three, 6-4, while improving their record as a duo to 5-0 on the season. Courts one and two were extremely close matches, both going to tiebreakers. No. 87 Sam Reeve/Marcos Castro Fabra fell 4-7 in their tiebreaker, while No. 83 Moritz Kudernatsch/Maxime Dubouch suffered a 5-7 defeat in their tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point for Northwestern.

Singles told a similar story, with three total tiebreakers and two matches going to a third set. Court four finished first as Leandro Zgraggen would fall 4-6, 2-6 to put the Wildcats up 2-0. The Tigers mounted a comeback soon after when Spaniard Marcos Castro Fabra claimed victory on court three, 6-2, 7-5, and Frenchman Maxime Dubouch followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court two to even the score at 2-2. Marko Milosavljevic fell after dropping a close second-set tiebreaker, 8-10, for a final score of 4-6, 6-7 (8).

Northwestern needed one more point to clinch the match and had already won first sets on both remaining courts. However, both Moritz Kudernatsch and Luis Carvalho won their second sets to push their matches to decisive third sets. Kudernatsch lost his first set in a tiebreaker, 9-11, but came right back with a 6-3 second-set win. Kudernatsch had match points at 5-4 but ended up falling 5-7 in the third set as Northwestern clinched the match 4-2. Carvalho's match was left unfinished while he was down 3-5 in the third set.

Memphis falls to 5-2 and will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Ole Miss. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Oxford, Mississippi.
