Tigers Prep for Midweek Doubleheader with Oakland
Mar 02, 2026 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (5-13) is set for a Tuesday doubleheader with the Oakland Grizzlies in a pair of games that were announced this past weekend.
The games will help both Memphis and Oakland account for games lost due to weather and travel concerns earlier this season. Both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis looks to rebound after going 1-5 in a four-day stretch in Baton Rouge against Southern, as well as opponents in the LSU Invitational.
Ariel Davis continues to dominate the Tigers' statistical categories with team highs in batting average (.385), hits (20), runs (15), home runs (4) and OPS (1.261), while also adding on four doubles, two triples and 10 RBI in her redshirt sophomore campaign.
Memphis has seen an uptick in power production through the first month of the season. At the plate, Memphis has already slugged 17 home runs in 18 games, compared to just 25 homers in a full 55-game season in 2025. The Tigers are also on pace to match last season's mark of 67 doubles with 20 currently, while also being more than halfway towards the previous season's 11 triples with six as of March 2.
The pitching staff has seen continued usage of at least five arms per weekend, with Memphis pitchers collectively making 51 appearances compared to its opponents' 40 appearances. Avery Stutts now sits as the staff's leader in innings pitched (29.1) and strikeouts (11) after tossing a complete game for her first collegiate victory. Jericho Tate and Taniyah Brown are the only other Tigers with at least 20 innings and fellow freshman Taylor Caton is the only other pitcher with 10-plus strikeouts in the circle.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Oakland (8-4) enters the midweek after having a six-game winning streak snapped with an 8-1 loss to Alabama on Sunday. In the 2026 season, the Grizzlies have notched two victories over Division I opponents with a pair of wins over Western Illinois to begin their season.
At the plate, three Grizzlies are hitting over .400, highlighted by Kamryn Troyer's .516 average with 16 hits and six doubles on the year. Kayla Turmell, currently .261 on the year, sits as Oakland's leader in run production with 13 RBI on the year while Alyssa Balcom and Autumn Liebhauser each have eight.
In the circle, Kenna Bommarito and Jessica Nelson both have three wins and ERAs under 2.50. Bommarito leads the staff with 27.2 innings pitched, two complete-game shutouts and 37 strikeouts. Of Oakland's six arms utilized this season, five have thrown at least seven innings and all five have an ERA under 4.00.
SERIES HISTORY VS. OAKLAND
Memphis and Oakland are set to face off for just the second and third times in program history. The lone previous meeting in 2017 was a 4-3 final in favor of the Tigers during that season's UofM Softball Tournament.
