Freshmen Duo Leads Memphis at Crimson Tide Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshmen Urko Etxebeste and Marek Waltke won their respective events—the 2,000-meter steeplechase and javelin—at the Crimson Tide Invitational on Friday evening.
Extebeste won his first collegiate event with a time of 5:56.47. Waltke won his second javelin event this season with a career-best throw of 69.94 meters.
Overall, Memphis brought home two victories, 11 top-five finishes and 13 personal-bests. A full list of the two victories, top-five finishes and PRs can be found below. Comprehensive meet results can be found in the link above.
Adela Mullerova and Isabelle Cruickshank made the podium for the Tigers for the second week in a row. Mullerova threw 49.61 meters for a second-place finish, while Cruickshank followed in third at 48.93 meters.
On the men's side, Oageng Mdlela and Daryl Smith Jr. swept the second and third spots in the triple jump. Mdlela leaped 14.93 meters to take silver, with Smith right behind at 14.90 meters.
Memphis will take next week off and return to action on Saturday, April 25, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the LSU Alumni Gold.
