MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (10-20, 3-6 American) baseball team heads to Jonesboro, Arkansas for a Tuesday midweek matchup with the Arkansas State Red Wolves (19-12, 6-6 Sun Belt). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Slayton Family Field.
Memphis holds a 69-37 advantage in the all-time series against Arkansas State heading into Tuesday's 107th meeting between the programs. The two teams squared off just last week at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field, where the Tigers secured an 11-9 win behind a go-ahead three-run homer from Brady McAbee in the eighth inning.
Memphis (10-20, 3-6 American) enters the midweek following a 2-1 series setback at South Florida. The Tigers opened the weekend by jumping out to an early lead, but the Bulls responded with a strong push in the later innings to claim game one. Memphis bounced back in game two, pairing an early offensive surge with a solid start from Will Howell to even the series. In the finale, South Florida capitalized on timely hits and a standout performance on the mound to take the series, holding the Tigers to just four hits.
Memphis has consistently applied pressure on the bases this season, totaling 72 stolen bases to lead the American Conference and rank 26th nationally. Senior Freddy Rodriguez has led the charge, going 24-for-27 on stolen-base attempts, a mark that tops the conference and sits sixth in the nation.
Thirteen Tigers have gone deep this season, combining for 33 home runs as a team. Senior center fielder Michael Gupton added to his total last weekend and leads the group with eight homers, a mark that ranks sixth in the conference. He also sits 10th in the American with a .607 slugging percentage.
Shane Cox has been a driving force in Memphis' lineup, leading the team with a .328 batting average while also topping the Tigers in hits (38) and doubles (10). He has provided consistent production throughout the season, recording at least one hit in 23 of Memphis' 30 games.
Arkansas State (19-12, 6-6 Sun Belt) is also coming off a 2-1 weekend series loss. The Red Wolves dropped two of three games at Troy, with all three games ending with a score of 6-4. In the opener, Troy plated two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to build a lead it would not relinquish. In game two, Arkansas State used a pair of multi-RBI home runs to account for all six runs in a 6-4 victory Friday night. In the rubber match, the Red Wolves were unable to maintain a four-run advantage, as Troy rallied to take the series finale Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
On the mound, the Tigers will start LHP Logan Rushing (0-1, 5.73 ERA), who also started for Memphis in last week's win over Arkansas State. The Red Wolves will counter with RHP Kole Turner (1-0, 2.53 ERA) who has made nine appearances so far this season. Turner is a native of British Columbia, Canada.
At the plate, Arkansas State has been led by Lane Walton (35 H / 10 HR / 34 RBI), Derek Martinez (1.201 OPS / 8 HR / 19 RBI) and Evan Griffis (5 HR / 25 RBI / 20 BB). As a team, the Red Wolves have played pitched extremely well thus far, ranking 20th in the nation in ERA (3.79), 19th in WHIP (1.24) and fifth in walks allowed per nine inning (3.11).
