Memphis softball head coach Trena Prater announced the hiring of Pat Grant on October. 6, 2025.Â
Grant's first season in the Bluff City was one full of offensive improvements, along with strong outings from behind the backstop, as Memphis catchers threw out 13 runners on the season. At the plate, Memphis' overall hitting numbers took a massive jump from 2025, with a batting average jump from .266 to .283, 37 more hits than the prior season and 23 more extra-base hits than the first season of the Prater era. Memphis' slash line jumped from .266/.344/.387 to .283/.370/.445 from 2025 to 2026. Memphis' .445 slugging percentage was the highest in single-season program history, and the .370 on-base percentage was the second-highest. The Tigers offense reached top 10 single-season marks in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, home runs, walks, stolen bases, sacrifice hits and sacrifice flies.Â
Grant comes to Memphis after most recently serving as the head softball coach at Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas, helping the Lady Jaguars to a Bi-District Championship in 2025 with eight student-athletes earning All-District honors. Â
Prior to returning to Texas where he taught and coached, Grant spent two years at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon as the assistant pitching coach and junior varsity baseball coach.
Grant also had a short stint as an assistant coach at Abilene Christian University, serving as lead recruiter and camp director. Before joining the Wildcats, Grant was the head coach and general manager for Team Outkast, a member of the American Softball Association.
Additionally, Grant spent a season as an assistant coach at Temple College, helping lead the team to its first national championship in 2018. He and the coaching staff were named the 2018 NJCAA Midwest Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. Grant's primary focus at Temple College was coaching hitters and infielders while helping with recruiting and creating practice plans.
Grant's coaching career began as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College, where he coached hitters and catchers, coordinated camps and created practice plans. He also spent time as a student manager at Mississippi State under head coach Vann Stuedemann, who is currently the head coach at American Conference opponent, UTSA.
Grant holds a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from Mississippi State and a Master of Athletic Administration from Mississippi College.
