MEMPHIS, Tenn. - On an overcast Memphis October evening, the Memphis Tigers were looking for a ray of sunshine on an apparently gloomy horizon." The Tigers had lost five straight games after opening up with a 4-1 record and building hopes for a successful 1st season under new coach Richie Grant." And things weren't looking any better." The Cincinnati Bearcats were coming" to town, and they owned a 7-2-1 record and had been ranked as high as 15th in the country this season.
Then, less than three minutes after the opening kick off, things started to look a lot brighter for the Tigers." That was when Steven Brooks, a senior forward, took a pass from Joey Lewis and put it past the Cincinnati goalkeeper to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead." It would be all that the Tigers needed.
A stellar defensive performance that shut down a potent Cincinnati attack was led by Mike Letterman, who was making his first start of the year in goal for the Tigers." His three save performance sealed the shutout win, and excellent defensive coverage by the Tiger defense held the Bearcats to only 9 shots on the evening.
The 1-0 win pulls the Tigers to a 5-6-0 record and evens their Conference USA record at 2-2-0 going into this week's games." The Tigers play next at UAB on Thursday, October 14, and their next home game is Sunday, October 17, against DePaul." The game time for DePaul is 3:00 p.m. at Echles field on the University of Memphis campus.
