MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis Tiger volleyball team defeated Southern Miss, 3-0, to improve to 13-3 overall, 4-3 in Conference USA. USM dropped to 7-10 overall, 2-5 in C-USA with the loss here Friday evening.
Memphis won the match by game scores of 30-17, 30-23 and 30-27. This was the first league match that Memphis had won in just three games. Already this season, Memphis has won more conference matches than they did last season.
"I was very excited about this win," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "This was a crucial match for us leading into the match with Tulane Saturday night. Tulane is a tough team and we needed this win to help us gain momentum and confidence before facing the Green Wave."
"I thought Adrianne played very hard for us and she gave us some key points with her strong hitting performance," added Yerty.
Senior Adrianne Edmonds led Memphis in hitting against the Golden Eagles with 17 kills and a .324 hitting mark. Edmonds was second on the squad with 12 digs while also totaling two service aces and two assisted blocks. Senior Emily Eichmann and sophomore Shella Neba also recorded double digit kills with 12 apiece. Eichmann led the defense with 14 digs, two assisted blocks and one solo block.
The Tigers as a team recorded a .290 hitting mark, while USM managed just a .117 hitting percentage. Memphis also totaled two solo and 12 assisted blocks, while USM recorded just six assisted blocks. Melissa Shreve led USM in hitting with 11 kills and a .219 hitting clip. Bridget Files also led USM with 10 kills.
The Tigers will host Tulane Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Green Wave is currently ranked third in Conference USA.
