Women's Tennis Loses Close Match, 4-3

Memphis,Tenn.-- - The University of Memphis women's tennis team dropped a close match, 4-3, to Arkansas-Little Rock, Friday. The loss drops Memphis to 7-6 overall.
The match-up featured a series of key matches, including a No. 2 doubles match that last an hour and a half. The UALR team of Alejandra Lopez and Layla Tohme downed the Memphis duo of Betsy Card and Annika Westberg, 9-8, to take the doubles point after the two rivals split the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.
Sabrina Lindemann won her No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-2, to tie the match at one apiece, but Julieta Lillo's 6-3, 6-0 win over Memphis' Rebecca Garner put UALR up 2-1.
Memphis battled back when Card out-hit her opponent at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2, tying the match at 2-2.
With Christina Ladyman battling back from 4-1 down in the first to win the set, 7-6, it appeared that the No. 4 or No. 5 singles matches would be the deciding matches. Ladyman went up 4-1 in the second set before UALR's Kelly Bucewicz battled back to within 5-4 before Ladyman broke Bucewicz' serve to win the second, 6-4.
But minutes before the Lady Tigers picked up the point Ladyman scored, sophomore Sumitra Rao, still bothered by an ankle sprain she suffered in the Lady Tigers' last match, could not hold off Cecilia Poveda at No. 4 and Alejandra Lopez downed Memphis' Annika Westberg, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to seal a UALR win.
The Lady Tigers continue their homestand against SIU-Carbondale and East Tennessee State, Saturday. Memphis will play a 9 a.m. match at The Racquet Club, Saturday, and then return to the Memphis courts for a 2 p.m. match. Three of the varsity courts have been refinished and will be used this weekend.
