MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team dropped its first Conference USA match of the season, 4-3, to league foe UAB, Friday afternoon. The loss drops the Tigers to 5-8 on the season and extends their longest losing streak of the season to six straight matches, while UAB picks up its eighth straight match and improves to 4-0 in the C-USA standings.
"We finally had some players who were struggling play really well in this match and then we had some players who were playing well before have a bad day," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "We just have to get everyone on the same page."
The Blazers jumped on the board first, using a pair of wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point after Memphis won the No. 1 match, 8-5.
Memphis senior Amrit Narasimhan then answered back with the Tigers first point, defeating freshman Slawomir Szeremeta, 6-2, 6-4, and snapping his five-match losing streak with the straight set victory. But the tie was quickly broken by a UAB win at No. 5 singles and the Blazers closed out the victory with a pair of vocal victories at No. 2 and 3 singles. Memphis still battled in the final two singles matches on court, as sophomore Charlie Ramsay prevailed in a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 5, while junior Benny Fischer battled back from a 6-4 first set loss to force a super-tiebreak with a 7-6 (5) win in the second set. Fischer gave Memphis its third point of the match with a 10-7 win in the tiebreak to close out the match.
The Tigers will remain at home for another match, Saturday, as non-conference foe Southern Illinois will step on the court across from the Tigers beginning at noon at Rhodes College. Admission is free, but fans are advised that there will also be a track meet going on immediately next door to the tennis compound.
