BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB completed a three-game conference sweep over the University of Memphis softball team, winning both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at George Ward Park. The Blazers run ruled the Tigers in game one, 9-1, in five innings and were defeated in series finale, 4-3.
Junior Leandra Hines led Memphis (16-14, 0-5) with four hits in the two games and matched a career high with a 3-for-4 performance in game two.
The Tigers fell behind in the second game after UAB scored a run in the second inning. Memphis knotted the game at one in the fourth inning on a RBI by Kailey Kassner.
The Blazers regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a run and then scored two more in the fifth. Memphis attempted a comeback in the sixth with two runs after having three hits in the inning, including doubles by sophomore Leigh Rowan and junior Tori Gross. The Tigers put the tying run on board in the seventh when junior Leila Dolfo led off with a walk, but UAB retired the side to preserve its one-run victory.
Memphis gave up eight runs in the third in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but lost for only the third time this season when scoring the first run in the game. Memphis hit into two double plays and were held hitless in the final two innings.
Kayla Harris (7-6) earned the victory for the Blazers, holding the Tigers to one run on three hits and striking out two. Freshman Janelle Valle (7-5) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in two and a third innings.
Rowan gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to left field. Hines began the scoring drive with a one-out infield single. She then advanced to second on her ninth stolen base of the season and scored on Rowan's two-out hit.
UAB exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third, marking the fourth time this season the Tigers have given up seven or more runs in an inning. The Blazers posted the eight spot on eight hits with two Memphis errors. Four of the runs were unearned.
Holly Krzan completed the run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning with her second double of the game to score Laura Callaway, who finished 3-for-3.
Memphis will next play a three-game Conference USA series at No. 11/12 Houston on Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30.
