MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader against Tulsa on Saturday night at the Tiger Softball Complex, falling 9-1 and 10-0.
Tulsa's Jackie Lawrence (9-2) threw a five inning no-hitter against Memphis in game two's defeat.
The Tigers were outscored 19-1 and outhit 20-2 in the two games by the Golden Hurricane, falling to 13-15 on the year and 1-4 in Conference USA play. Freshman Jessica Phillips knocked in the only run for Memphis in the two games with her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the first contest.
The games were moved up three hours from its original start time due to inclement weather in the area.
Tulsa (19-9, 5-2) stranded the bases loaded in the first inning of game one, but then scored three in the second inning on a three-run homer by Skylar Swanson. Swanson finished the day with a home run in each game and had eight RBI in the ninth hole of the Golden Hurricane lineup.
TU's lead increased to four with a run in the fourth inning. Swanson scored from second on a single by Lauren Menke through the left side. Swanson originally was called out at home on an assist from left fielder Leandra Hines, but the home umpire later changed the play to safe as a result of catcher obstruction.
Three more runs came across the plate for Tulsa in the fifth inning on three hits and an error. After Phillips homered in the bottom of the fifth for the Tigers only score of the day, TU then scored two more in the sixth on a two-run homer by Brooke Smart to give the team an eight-run lead, which it held in the bottom of the inning for the run rule.
Sophomore Kimber Bossom (5-3) suffered the loss for Memphis after pitching an inning plus. She allowed two earned runs on two hits. Sophomore Janelle Valle pitched the final five innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
Jordan Kinard (5-4) earned the victory for Tulsa in the circle with the two-hitter. She struck out eight in six innings and walked two.
Tulsa jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning of game two led by a leadoff homer by Lauren Lindsay. Lindsay had two solo homers in the game.
TU scored three runs in the second and third and two runs in the fifth in the five-inning run rule victory. The Golden Hurricane hit four home runs in the game.
Junior Vanessa Walle (4-5) took the loss and allowed eight runs in two and a third innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Senior Lyndsey Sterling pitched the final two and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on three hits with a walk.
Lawrence struck out eight batters in her third career no-hitter and third no-hitter of the season for Tulsa. Memphis had only three base runners in the game; reaching on a hit batter, a walk and an error.
Memphis and Tulsa will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at noon at the Tiger Softball Complex.
