Tigers take final trip of 2010

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The men’s soccer team will take in its last match on the road this season, Sunday, when the Tigers visit Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. (EST) in the Tigers second-to-last Conference USA match of 2010.
The Tigers, though eliminated from contention in Conference USA, are eager to use this opportunity to play the role of spoiler for opposing C-USA foes. South Carolina currently sits at 3-2-1 in conference play, a mark that is good enough to have them sitting at fourth in the conference but has yet to guarantee them a spot in the field of six that will begin play on Oct. 10 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The Gamecocks didn’t get to where they are in the conference by accident. South Carolina’s success starts with keeper Jimmy Maurer, who is in contention for an all-conference spot; the senior leads C-USA with seven clean sheets.
Offensively, senior forward Blake Brettschneider has keyed the Gamecock offense so far this season, with four goals and six assists to his credit. Freshman Bradlee Baladez and senior Will Traynor each have five goals to their credit this season.
The Tigers come in to this match hoping that a much-maligned offense that is missing several key components can put together a nice stretch run in anticipation of next season. Young players such as Liam Collins, JJ Greer, Jamal Keene and Mark Sherrod all have been contributors at one point or another in 2010 and now will need to put together a solid stretch of matches to build upon for next season.
In net, the Tigers are going with a committee approach between sophomore Jordan Leedle and freshman Martin Hunter; both will get chances in net during the Tigers last three matches.
Upon completion of their match at South Carolina, the U of M soccer players will return for two final home matches: Nov. 3 against Alabama A&M and Senior Night, November 5, against UAB in a match that will be televised on Fox Soccer Channels “NSCAA Game of the Week”.
Van Dyck named top-100 freshman
Freshman defender Maxim Van Dyck, a native of Blankenberge, Belgium, was rated the 86th-best freshman in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com's panel of experts. The left-booted Van Dyck has started 10 matches and played in all 15 for the Tigers so far, assisting on two goals and becoming the point man for free kicks and corners.
Memphis to host Conference USA Tournament
The University of Memphis is pleased to announce it has won the right to host the 2010 Conference USA Men's Soccer Tournament. The top six regular-season finishers will battle for the championship at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, Nov. 10-14.
Grant approaches career wins mark
Coach Richie Grant enters this match with 105 victories, five shy of tying predecessor Chris Bartels for most in men's soccer history.
