MEMPHIS, Tenn. -It was a friendly battle at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Wednesday night as the Tigers women’s volleyball team took part in the Blue and Gray Game, the season-opening scrimmage between alumni and current players.
The alumni team was as made up of past players Heather Watts-Klepco, Lauren Trouy, Rachel Theard, and Christine Bach . Accompanying the alumni were two current players to make up the six starters on the court.
The current Tigers team dominated the first two sets as it took some time for the alumni team to get going. But, they got reacquainted and gave the 2011 Tigers a good scrimmage.
Leading the alumni in comeback fashion were the sneak attacks by setters and players pushing the ball over on the second ball. By the third game current outside hitter Altrese Hawkins led the alumni with back-to-back kills to keep it a close finish. The current Tigers were still too much, however, as the alumni fell 25-23.
The alumni broke through in the fourth and final set of the night, winning 25-20 over the 2011 Tigers.
Memphis opens the season Friday, Aug. 26 when it takes on Alabama A&M at noon as part of the Memphis Invitational. Memphis will then take on SEMO that night at 7 p.m.
