STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Memphis volleyball team opened up play at the Maroon Classic in Starkville, Miss., with a 25-13, 26-24, 25-18, three-set victory over Nicholls State. The Tigers (3-4) were aided by five blocks and seven aces on their way to the third win on the season while the Colonels fall to 3-4. The Blue and Gray held its opponents to a .089 hitting percentage and forced 27 errors in the win.
Senior Lauren Wright picked up 10 kills and assisted on two blocks while freshman Kate Gibson just missed a double-double with eight kills and 14 digs. Junior setter Veronica Zimmerman dished out 24 assists and senior Aleksandra Petronijevic logged 16 digs. The libero needs 13 digs to move into second place on the all-time list and 34 to take over the top spot.
For just the second match this season, Memphis was able to post a first-set victory over the Colonels. The Tigers got off to a hot start with Gibson recording a pair of aces in the game's first four points. Junior Alexis Wesley and freshman Oluchi Agomuo combined for five blocks in the set to hold Nicholls to a .000 hitting percentage and just six kills.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the match after pouncing out to a 14-3 lead in the second game. The Colonels would make things interesting after orchestrating a 13-3 run of their own, but a late surge by Memphis shut down any hopes of a second-set comeback.
Memphis was again aided by a quick start in the third set, going up 9-3 before cruising to the finish in the final game.
The Tigers will be in action again this evening when they take on host-school Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Live stats for tonight's match are available here: http://www.hailstate.com/liveStats/liveStats.dbml?SPSID=90951&SPID=11005&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=16800&LIST_SPORT_KEY=W_VOLLEYBALL.
